Brandon Beck On Pursuing Your Full Potential

Brandon Beck is an expert skier and freestyle cliff jumper who thrives through living a life dedicated to his passions, the outdoors, his family, and living life to the fullest. While Brandon has not always been sure about which way he wanted to live a life to reach his greatest potential, he has learned along the way that “It’s just as easy to make an excuse as it is to step up and go after what you want.”

Brandon’s love for the outdoors truly stemmed from his father. His father was a professional freestyle skier who taught him everything he knows about skiing and the outdoors. Brandon’s father grew up on Lake Tahoe in California, which is known for its abundant outdoor space used for just about any adventure sport a kid could dream of. His father was able to pass his love for the outdoors on to all his children, and Brandon hopes to do the same. As a kid, Brandon’s family was very active and spent most of their time outdoors and traveling. Every one of Brandon’s siblings has a unique outdoor hobby that they owe thanks to their parents for instilling in them. Brandon explains that his unique outdoor passion became skiing. He says, “Skiing just became this ultimate passion for me, and I’d pretty much do anything to go skiing in the wintertime.”

Currently, Brandon lives at Lake Tahoe where he is blessed with the opportunity to rent his father’s house. He is a self-employed stonemason, with a flexible work schedule that buys him time to invest in his passions of skiing, cliff jumping and spending time with his two kids. Brandon has also secured brand partnerships, with companies like Moment Ski Company and Olympic Boot Works, to help fund his skiing adventures. On top of all of this, he is a freestyle skiing coach, in the nearby Squaw Valley, where he gets to work with a team of talented kids who often end up competing in the X Games or the Olympics. He cherishes the opportunity he has to make a positive impact on these kids’ lives while also helping them improve their craft. Brandon loves his balanced lifestyle and never plans on leaving it. Yet, Brandon’s ideal lifestyle did not always seem so clear and straightforward in his mind.

When Brandon was in his early 20s, he was confused about what he wanted to do with his life, like many of people at that age. He lost sight of his adventurous, go-getter spirit for a while. He was going down a career path where he felt very complacent and no longer energized by what he was doing and the people he was surrounding himself with. Brandon came to the realization that he was not setting himself up in a place to pursue the careers, core values, and passions that he used to long for. He knew it was time to realign with his goals even though it may not be an easy feat. This was the moment that it became clear to Brandon that life brings twists and turns, but in the end, you will find yourself where you are supposed to be if you put in the work to get there.

Around this time, Brandon discovered a new community on social media. He went out on a limb to connect with a group of freestyle cliff jumpers that he found on Facebook and YouTube. At the time, Brandon did not have any friends that were cliff jumpers, as it is a dangerous and uncommon sport. However, before they knew it, this group became a tight-knit group of friends while traveling the country in search of new cliff jumping locations. The strong sense of a supportive community, a loyal learning environment, and the feeling of brotherhood that they established became unbeatable for Brandon. Since the sport can be extremely dangerous, the men have created a system where they constantly ask each other for advice and constructive feedback to ensure that they are being as safe as possible while also refining their skills. There have been instances where one person in the group, usually Brandon, insisted that they double-check the pool of water they are jumping into, even if it’s a frequent cliff jumping spot for them. This consistent emphasis on safety has saved them from tragic accidents in a handful of different scenarios. Brandon says that this close group of friends is one of the many reasons that he is drawn to keep coming back to the sport. It is always reassuring to make best friends, or even close colleagues, in the field that you are passionate about because they help to push you to improve but also have similar interests and values in mind.

“It’s really fun being scared to death but knowing you can pull off a dangerous stunt and land well. It’s the best feeling in the world and you just keep chasing that feeling.”  – Brandon Beck

In addition to a supportive cohort, Brandon continues to come back to cliff jumping day after day because of the adrenaline he gets when flying through the air. Amidst a jump, as he is flying for a moment, Brandon describes how time begins to slow down around him. He explains the feelings further, “[Cliff Jumping] is a pretty funny sport to look at: incredibly dangerous, nerve-wracking, but the adrenaline rush that you get from that stuff is unreal. It is really fun being scared to death but knowing you can pull off a dangerous stunt and land well. It’s the best feeling in the world and you just keep chasing that feeling.” While that sense of danger within the sport really creates the heightened feeling of adrenaline, it also pushes Brandon to be more calculated and meticulous in all his jumps. He has two kids, so he makes sure to never put himself in a place of extreme danger. He really hopes that he will be able to pass on his safe practices to future generations of cliff jumpers.

“Life is a quest to explore our potential, both physical and spiritual. Both are of equal importance. Live strong. Be brave. Be true to your own heart. Dare to live up to your own potential. Don’t let others set the standard. Be useful in your life. Create.” – Greg Beck, Brandon Beck’s Father

There is a quote that Brandon continues to embody on a daily basis that his father, Greg Beck, shared with him as a young kid. The quote says, “Life is a quest to explore our potential, both physical and spiritual. Both are of equal importance. Live strong. Be brave. Be true to your own heart. Dare to live up to your own potential. Don’t let others set the standard. Be useful in your life. Create.” Brandon aims to live by this quote every day with all his endeavors. It is a very insightful quote for all of us to consider when contemplating how we want to spend our time on this earth.
